Before the prospect of dying, Santiago says that the fish has the right and that he does not care who kills who. For Santiago, pain is not important. Santiago was born to be a fisherman just as the fish was born to be a fish. For Santiago fishing is his purpose, his work and his life, a struggle that wears him down.
