What was the US involvement look like before the gulf of Tonkin incident

The United States was not very directly involved in Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The U.S. only sent money and supplies to aid south Vietnam. After the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the United States began to get more involved by sending troops to fight against the north Vietnam forces.
