Plant fertilizers contain salts. Why is it important to use the correct amount of fertilizer?

Because salt absorbs water. If there is overwhelming amounts of salt in the fertilizer, then the plant will become dehydrated due to the salt soaking up the water.

Sodium (salt) is toxic to most plants.
