Change 2 1/2 to improper fraction = (2*2 + 1)/2 = (4 + 1)/2 = 5/2

2  1/2  ÷ 1/2 = 5/2  ÷ 1/2

We change the ÷ to × and the fraction 1/2 inverts to 2/1

= 5/2  ÷ 1/2

= 5/2  × 2/1        2 would cancel out 2.

= 5/1

= 5
