The two main points of view related to the sectarian nature of the Boxers organization were: First, the Boxers started as an anti-Qing movement.  They were opposed to the existing government of China. This was connected to their early association with the Lotus society. By the 1890's, they became supporters of the Qing. However, the Boxers retained their opposition to the foreigners. The second point of view was that the Boxers were recruited by the Qing as a military force to help oppose the foreigners.  

The different opinions that historians put forwards about the sectarian nature of the boxers' institution were focused on rebellion and resistance perspective.

These two opinions are given below:

  • The boxers started an anti-Qing movement, which was against the existing government of China. The Boxers were also in the opposition to the foreigners in the institution.
  • The second opinion made the boxers get recruited as a military force in the Qing movement to oppose the foreigners.
