Gutenberg's early training was in goldsmithing. It is generally accepted that he used what he saw and understood of metalworking techniques such as punch-cutting, casting and stamping to develop the first printing press in around 1440. This extremely important development allowed manuscripts to be mass-produced for the first time at a relatively affordable cost.
